Senior journalism student Claire Sant currently works as BG Falcon Media’s Social Media Director, leading a group of about 10 interns and additional volunteers to create social media content for everything BG Falcon Media.
However, Claire hasn’t always worked with social media for BG Falcon Media.
Initially, Claire says she joined the BG Falcon Media team during her junior year to complete a required internship that all students in the School of Media and Communication need for graduation. However, she said being a part of BG Falcon Media quickly “turned into something that I actually enjoyed and continued even after my internship.”
“It’s been like the best experience of being at BGSU because I’ve just gotten to see so many different facets and learn so many different things and kind of hop around,” she added.
Claire has been involved since starting as an intern for the Falcon Media Sports Network. She said she was “heavily” involved in this position, working primarily on taking photographs and writing feature stories about BG student athletes.
At the end of her junior year, Claire said Falcon Media Manager Karl Smith approached her and asked her to consider “getting more involved with a higher level of BG Falcon Media.”
Claire decided to apply for an executive position with the team as managing editor of the BG News. She said she always had a love for writing, but never knew she could do it as a career. She served as managing editor for the Fall 2024 semester then decided to apply for the social media position, since it fit her “outgoing” personality.
Switching positions presented challenges. She said there is a “whole different set of rules” and that when she switched positions, she had to learn how to “put away the AP style and all of the things that go with writing.”
The social media role allowed Claire to learn much more about engagement, algorithms, analytics and metrics.
Claire said she’s looking forward to graduating this May with a journalism degree and plans to work in the public relations field, ideally with social media at a marketing firm. Staying close to BGSU would be a bonus.
“I love Bowling Green,” she said. “I found a community here.”
Claire’s biggest takeaway from her varied experiences at BG Falcon Media is, “Don’t be afraid to start.” She added, “I didn’t even know about BG Falcon Media at the start of my junior year and then halfway through the year, I was fully immersed in the [Falcon Media] Sports Network.”
