All too often while in the midst of doing a lot of great work and making progress, we lose sight of how far we have come and what we have accomplished. It’s important to take a moment to reflect and celebrate, so that’s exactly what we did on the last day of the academic year (well, not including finals).

Nearly 70 students gathered at the Slater Family Ice Arena to celebrate all things Falcon Media and that number alone represents a great accomplishment as we continue to not just rebuild the ranks in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic but also work to reach out to a more diverse group of students across all corners of the campus.

Leaders of each of our groups presented awards – some light-hearted, some just a bit more serious – and it was encouraging to see so many people recognized for their contributions.

As I did last year, I presented four awards (yes, the Falcon Four) and shared with the group the Dale Carnegie method for showing genuine appreciation, something that often gets lost as we move from task to task. As each of the four award winners stepped forth, I thanked them using that method and challenged them to do the same for someone they believed deserved similar recognition. It was quite a pleasant surprise that every single one of them, on the spot, called someone forward and followed that method, a sign of an improving culture.

While we will be losing some great leaders to graduation this year, I’m happy to report that many of these students will return in August. Student media is in good hands and continues to flourish at BG.
