She’s only here for a semester but expect her to have a big impact – Nia Lambdin took over as the latest BG News Editor-in-Chief in January. Get to know her with this quick Q&A:
Q. Give us the basics – major, minor, hometown
A. I’m a Multiplatform Journalism major from Alliance, Ohio with a minor in Communications.
Q. Why print journalism?
A. I am pursuing print journalism because of my love for writing and reading. I grew up reading the paper with my grandfather and found that the nostalgia that comes with reading a good paper is something people should hold onto.
Q. What sort of things have you done with Falcon Media?
A. I have been a part of Falcon Media for three years. Since starting, I have participated as a reporter for BG24 and BG News, a beat writer for USG, managing editor of BG News, and finally the Editor in Chief of BG News. As I’ve grown as a writer, I have taken on mentoring younger students.
Q. What sort of skills have you gained and/or sharpened by working with student media?
A. I have sharpened my leadership skills by working with Falcon Media, as well as my communication skills. My overall journalism skills have also sharpened throughout my time within Falcon Media.
Q. A good portion of your time at BG included the COVID lockdown. What change have you seen in your work with Falcon Media over those years?
A. I have noticed a lot of changes in my work since COVID has lifted. In the beginning, sports was basically the only thing people could write about, which I did. Now, I write about everything from local events to national problems being localized to BGSU and the community.
Q. You’ll be the editor for one semester, probably 12 issues. What do you hope to accomplish? What are your goals and objectives?
A. With my time as editor, I am hoping to bring about more hard news into the weekly paper. I also want to get our online presence to be better and quicker with the news.
Q. How can alumni help Falcon Media and the BG News?
A. Alumni can help Falcon Media by being willing to share their extensive knowledge with the journalism department. We are always looking for people to come to speak with the group and share their experiences with the younger writers. We love to hear from alumni and are always looking for ways to connect with them.
Q. What are your plans for life after graduation?
A. I plan to attend graduate school after graduation so that one day I can give back to the future of journalism as a teacher.
Update: Nia shared recently that she plans to do her graduate work here at BGSU.
