Archive: BG News History

It's becoming a tradition The BG News could easily get used to.

For the second consecutive year and the third time in four years, The BG News has been named Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) in its Region 4 Mark of Excellence awards contest.

Besides the all-around award, seven BG News staff members won writing and photography awards. The BG News' three first-place individual winners included 2005-06 Editor-in-Chief Bob Moser, Campus News Editor Bridget Tharp and Photographer Josh Phillips.

The BG News was among five daily college newspapers that earned a prestigious Best of Show award in a top category at this year's National College Media Convention sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Advisers, Inc.

The BG News received honorable mention status, along with The Daily Texan at the University of Texas-Austin, in the category for broadsheet newspapers at four-year colleges. The top three finishers were The Daily Tar Heel, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; The Daily Pennsylvanian, University of Pennsylvania; and The Badger Herald, University of Wisconsin.

If you missed The BG News' 85th anniversary reunion weekend in BG Town last September, you don't want to pass up the opportunity to purchase the souvenir 40-page anniversary insert published in The News Sept. 30, 2005. The publication traces the history of the student newspaper -- and BGSU -- through stories, photos and timelines broken down by decades. Stories were written by BG News alumni.

A limited number of the inserts -- titled "The Campus Voice for 85 Years" -- are available for a minimum donation of $10 to The BG News Alumni Society. Checks should be payable to the BGSU Foundation and mailed to Bob Bortel, BG News, 214 West Hall, Bowling Green, OH. 43403-0234. Please note on the check the donation is for The BG News Fund account.

The history of The BG News

Imagine a newspaper published by writing stories longhand without use of a typewriter or computer, one dominated by poetry and gossip.

That was in May 1920, when students at Bowling Green Normal College received the first edition of the monthly Bee Gee News. The front page featured an essay on "Why Teach School" and a list of all students enrolled for summer school. Begun as a project of the Country Life Club of Bowling Green, the first issue also included a reprinted poem.

The Toledo chapter of the Association for Women in Communications recently recognized two current The BG News staff members for writing excellence over the past year.

Laren Weber, city news editor in 2005-06 and executive editor in 2006-07, won the organization's highest honor -- the Crystal Award of Excellence -- for a feature article she wrote in summer 2005 while reporting for the Tiffin (Ohio) Advertiser-Tribune. Weber also won the Merit Award of Achievement for an Advertiser-Tribune news article.

Megan Schmidt, opinion editor in 2005-06, won the Merit Award of Achievement for news commentary for a column she wrote in March 2005 for The BG News on the death penalty. Schmidt is a staff reporter for the 2006-07 BG News staff.
